I recently read that fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld was "heir to his father's evaporated milk fortune." Does this mean that Lagerfeld's father left him a fortune earned in the evaporated-milk business, or that Lagerfeld's father made a fortune in the milk business and then squandered it?
